Charcoal Drawings

I love the fluidity of charcoal, the way it allows me to approach a drawing without a clear plan; ideas can appear somewhere on the page and then be changed and moved until they assume their final shape and position in the whole. I usually layer these works, starting with a background of ink image and text, over which I draw in charcoal. At the end I frequently add further text or image with pastel. In this way a portrait becomes as layered
as its subject. Although I do some smaller drawings, I mostly work at a 24" x 30" size.
